In 1997, historian Anthony Cohen helped prepare Oprah Winfrey for her role in Beloved by creating a two-day immersion experience for her on a 19th-century Maryland plantation. Oprah arrived, donned the clothing of an enslaved woman, and then embarked on a historical odyssey that would take her along streams and forest trails on a simulated journey to freedom. What happened to her next changed the course of her life and altered the “change your life” television show that she made famous.
Join historian Anthony Cohen as he reveals how the story of an enslaved woman helped Oprah to become a force for inspiration and transformative change in our lifetime. This immersion experience enables you to literally walk “a mile” in her shoes—two miles to be exact— as we retrace the mysterious trail that Oprah traveled on that fateful day. Following the walk we will visit an Underground Railroad museum.
