Situated on 40 pristine acres, tucked inside of Seneca Creek State Park, the historic Button Farm is Maryland’s only living history center depicting 19th-century slave plantation life. Our Underground Railroad Immersion Experience—designed in 1997 to train Oprah Winfrey for her role in the film Beloved—brings to life the heroic and untold story of the Underground Railroad journey.

Participants are guided through hands-on experiences of an 1850s farm including chores and trades, implements of slavery and the formidable auction block. Stroll our heirloom museum garden, visit the heritage-breed animal pens, discover old-world treasures in our general store and commune with the ancestors at the slave cemetery.
