Great Escapes - Washington DMV

Travel Harriet Tubman's journey physically, spiritually and intellectually in the Washington, D.C. Metro area

The Underground Railroad in Montgomery County, MD was one of the most successful routes to freedom in the years before the Civil War. Those fleeing bondage forged intricate networks passing through Washington, DC, and Baltimore to Philadelphia, and were aided on to Canada with the help of such luminaries as William Still, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Come explore plantations, sanctuaries, and long-forgotten places where these unsung self-liberators lived, and discover the enslaved, Free-black, and Quaker allies who provided aid and comfort along the way.
