Harriet Beeche-Stowe

  • In Their Steps: Rockville's Underground Railroad

Josiah Henson was enslaved in Rockville for nearly thirty years before escaping to Canada where he established a community for runaway slaves. There Henson gained fame as the model for “Tom” in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s bestselling Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Discover Henson and other Rockville freedom seekers such as 15-year-old Anne Maria Weems, who pulled off her perilous journey to the North while disguising herself as a boy. Our tour winds through Rockville’s historic district revealing the 19th-century homes from which freedom seekers escaped, along with churches, cemeteries, and slave auctions sites along this clandestine network to freedom.
