This is my favorite holiday. Truly, it is!
I’m one that gets goosebumps whenever I hear songs that reflect on our great nation ~ from “America the Beautiful” to “God Bless America”, from “Star Spangled Banner” to Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land”. Regardless of political stance, we are blessed with a great nation built on personal freedoms and for this I am most grateful. As a Harriet Tubman tour guide I give thought daily to those who have come before and given so much. From the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence who took that bold leap declaring independence, to Harriet who risked her life for freedom and the abolition of slavery, to Susan B. Anthony who fought for my right to vote, to Rev. Martin Luther King who fought to equalize civil rights to name a few. Sweat and courage, tears and pride, bloodshed and perseverance, hardship and hope. So much has been given so that we may enjoy the blessings of today. It is an inspiration to give of ourselves to those yet to come. The pledge that describes our nation as “one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all” did not come easily and should not be taken for granted simply as words to recite but words to embrace, reflect upon and live by. Words to inspire us to strive to preserve and protect this foundation for all. We are flawed, we are adolescent, we are a beloved mess; but fortunately we are not denied the freedoms or opportunities to participate in the biggest room of all ~ the room for improvement!
So wherever this day may take you and however you celebrate your Independence Day holiday, I hope you too will experience some goosebumps of gratitude as you hear a chorus of one of our familiar patriotic songs. And may you too be inspired to reach out tomorrow to strengthen our nation, one community, one person, at a time.
Happy July 4th to all!!
